One simulated metropolis per child

SimCity screenshot Games company Electronic Arts have donated Will Wright’s classic game SimCity to the One-Laptop-Per-Child project. Which is excellent news - not just because it adds to the educational arsenal of the machines but because SimCity is a great game that still holds up against current titles. [Image by Theogeo]

Cool. Will Wright’s games are among the most thought-provoking. Sandbox games like SimCity and the upcoming Spore let gamers play with many different aspects of a world - what happens if I change the type of power station, or put more volcanos on the world?

A lot of the info games sprouting up to advertise causes and products would do well to take this kind of thing into consideration - choice between different outcomes is both enjoyable and informative.

I’m seriously thinking about buying one of those laptops, ultra-efficient wifi enabled word processor and internet browser you can use in direct sunlight? Sounds perfect.

Tomas, the OLPC may not be a bad idea, but the one I’ve got my eye on is the Asus eee. But the OLPC is more charitable, I guess.

you’re right, the eee looks like a more market-orientated machine. I just love the idea of a machine I can read ebooks on in full sunlight…
