Art must change anew
for now we have machines which
compute our new haiku.
It has always been my contention that American haiku does not have to conform to the 5/7/5 syllable or line rules of Japanese haiku. You can write an American haiku with as little as ten syllables:
Listening to the rain
after midnight.
Conversely, to translate your original haiku into Japanese would require considerably more syllables than 17.
