Thanks Paul, that makes sense. i think that's a really strong list - I was tempted to put McLeod on my list but due to time constraints and it being a library book i didn't get to finish it. I haven't read the Talbot book but the others are all excellent.

Tomas - the UK edition of Halting State wasn't published in 2007, and hence isn't eligible for a BSFA this time round.

It still amazes me that all the talk seems to be about the Chiang story. Okay, I confess a certain bias here, but I still rate both Chaz Brenchley's story and Ken MacLeod's as two of the best I've read anywhere in years. The latter is one of two stories from the disLOCATIONS anthology picked up by Gardner Dozois for his next 'Year's Best' anthology, so at least somebody agrees with me.

I definitely agree with you about the Chiang, Paul. It's probably his weakest ever, in my opinion. It was enjoyable, but didn't set fire to my brain like most of his stories have.

That novel list looks familiar.... http://futurismic.com/2007/12/31/a-new-years-look-at-2007s-science-fiction/

I wonder why Halting State was left off.
