Understood, Ben and Dan, but I'd argue that publicity is a huge component of any valid business model these days, especially in the creative markets. The old models are not yet dead; we're getting to watch people fumbling toward the new ones in public. Fascinating stuff, no? :)

also worth noting that the NIN album is coming out as a physical disc in July, and so maybe this can be lumped into the promotional category as well.

Maggie Hogarth and I are... not exactly making a living, but making a decent amount of money (over SFWA rates) by posting stories on our blogs with a PayPal button.

"the sound of old business models crumbling under the weight of change."

This doesn't apply to the Doctorow book, because the revenues will still derive from selling the physical book. The point of giving electronic copies away is to promote print sales. So it's not so much a new business model as a new promotional technique.
