Also catching up: I've been saving this one for a quiet moment ;)

Truly beautiful. I love speculative fiction that connects to real objects and legends that surround them, and I've never heard of maquech jewellery before. This was a nice surprise!

Catching up: A quiet, subtle, effective story. Gerardo reminded me of some Philip K. Dick's small-artisan characters from "The Man in the High Castle," and of course the artificial animals recalled "Do Androids Dream...?" It's unusual to see an sf story built of small moments. Really nicely crafted, like the title object itself.

Silvia, I can't get over how clean and spare, but rich, your writing is. You have a beautiful style.

Loved your story, Silvia. I lived in Mexico City as a girl, where occasional vendors sold jewelled beetles. My dad always refused to get one for me, but I was fascinated by their exotic beauty.
Your near future Mexico City sounded highly realistic to me.

Okay, this is the second time I tried to comment, as the spambot ate the first. Was going to say that I thought the pacing of this one really worked in matching that of the beetle, which is slow and patient. I also really liked the idea of the living jewelry. I love speculative stories that use gems as a focus. There aren't nearly enough out there. So it was nice to see one, and a mundane SF one, to boot. Good job, Silvia!
