I greatly liked Sagramanda. I took Sanjay to be the main protagonist. Indeed, there are many protagonists in a story that is not set in Kali Yuga. And as I remember the work, Taneer creates what he steals and wants to set it free to save the world (and prosper in the process).

Lots of the characters are "bad". But all the "good" bad creatures triumph, and all the evil bad people do not ... at least in some sense. Bad Jena dies happy. The lovely killer Tiger survives the day and gets something to eat. Tanneer and his bride live happily ever after, as do Sanjay and his family. They got the money. The detective is happy. He got his killer. The powerful crooked broker who helps Sanja and Taneer prospers. He got his money.

Bad Jena dies with a smile on her face, but dead is dead. Taneer's wicked papa is not happy. The faceless, ruthless company who hires the evil heartless professional, perfect killer Chal is not happy. Evil souless Chal is not anything ... except tiger food. Dead is dead.

As someone who has only lived in India a few times and who has studied mother India and some of her people, I greatly enjoyed Foster's depiction of near future India and his tale of the tiger. Write on.

Sounds like someone created a world, but not the characters that make the world real. There seems to be a lot of this these days - people are more concerned about their world making that they fail to stick with the essential points of any great book - the storyline and the characters.
