Very well done. A welcome call.

Our own best film recommendations we do each year. For example this year
see <a href="http://www.concatenation.org/vidrev/film10.html#others" rel="nofollow">http://www.concatenation.org/news/news1~10.html#best_films</a>
and we also do an alternative ('other worthies') to the top British Isles SF film
chart. This year's is here

The main difference between me and the Hugo voters is that I like Horror. In fact, I'd even go so far to say that, cinematically, Horror is by far the strongest of the three genres.

Martyrs, Dead Set and Let The Right One In are all solidly supernatural works of horror. I actually left out Eden Lake on the grounds that it contained no supernatural elements, despite it being eligible as a work of Horror.

Blindness is rigorously genre. It's a dystopia. The problem is that genre tends to be quite xenophobic and so the works of people like Saramago and Houellebecq tend to be known as purely mainstream works despite the fact that they are as much works of genre as anything put out by Michael Chabon.

The only one that's kind of questionable is Jar City and when you read the book you'll see that the technology (while real world) and the issues it raises, are exactly the type of things that SF talks about. Also the film is full of SF iconography... just look at the poster.

I think you'll enjoy Jar City actually as your tastes, much like mine, map quite neatly onto the book and film's blend of SF, crime and mainstream issues.

Nice piece, I liked the Wells' reference.

Interestingly, Dead Set is the only one of these I've seen, a clever reworking of genre tropes which maintained surprising faithfulness to the form while still doing something new with it.

Let the Right One in sounds fascinating, Jar City I plan to read soon so I won't see the film for some time.

Certainly I prefer your list to the actual one, but I think had your list been the actual one the blogosphere would be alive with complaints that it wasn't genre enough.
