The 'bio signature' of humans is different from that of the aliens they are fighting, and so all the guns are equipped with sensors which detect if there is a human in the firing path. And so, if a human is in the way, you can't take the shot. Here's the twist. RFID tag all the US Army soldiers, then do something similar to the above with their guns.
