Neologism of the week: Potemkin packaging

Paul Raven @ 23-02-2011

Couldn’t resist posting this one up after seeing it on Richard Kadrey’s Twitter stream yesterday:

Best new phrase heard today: “Potemkin Packaging.” Companies putting less product in the same size packages to fool customers.

Language is awesome.

Have not heard the words “Potemkin Packaging” in the circle I travel in but, it is true. We are all affected, especially in the food we eat. I have to be frugal with my money and get the “Best for the Buck”. I buy frozen entree dinners for a dollar or less. It Seems that Banquet, has taken the low road in their product and shaped the tray the food comes in to hold less content. Believe that is why they put the weight content in decimal; keeps you guessing.

An excellent adaptation, but I have to feel sorry for poor Grigory.

This practice has been going on for years; but probably no-one has named it till now.
