Science fiction stalwart Ben Bova has a column at Bonita News where he rails against what he sees as a rising tide of moronitude that threatens to drown the human race itself. I have some sympathy with what he’s saying, but I very much doubt that getting more people to read science fiction would make a difference. [SF Signal]

It reads like the rants I see published in the letters to the editor column in the local paper. Which are just like the ones they published twenty, thirty, forty years ago.
Darn kids – get off my grass!
I remember the story he quotes from. But he forgets that many “stupid” groups (e.g. Irish, Jews) are now considered smart. The reason? Good nutrition, opportunities, education.
“severe” retardation dies out. “mild” retardation is multifactorial. Get rid of some of the factors, and you have smart people.
