In science fiction, honesty > optimism

Ian Sales recently posted some thoughts with respect to the “optimism in sf” debate.

If it is possible to write optimistic science fiction, then it can only be by focusing on the quotidian, by writing fictions which are intensely personal, which look for small everyday victories, which ignore the big questions. Some might call that a failure of imagination.

Science fiction doesn’t need to be optimistic, it needs to be honest.

Hmmm. I’d hold up Jason Stoddard’s “Willpower” as an example of optimistic sf that ranges beyond the personal and doesn’t ignore the big questions – unless by “the big questions” you mean questions like “why do we exist”, and much as I like fiction that tackles heavy philosophy I can’t read it all the time.

That said, honesty in science fiction is something I could get behind. Nothing switches me off like an author shilling for an ideology…

Stuff you can’t see on Google Maps

As the title says: 51 things you can’t see on Google Maps, via Bruce Schneier. No prizes for guessing that most of them are military installations or government-sponsored institutions.

In a decade’s time, will there be more things on this list, or less? Will the list vary according to which nation-state you make your search from? Will there be a ‘black’ maps service that unfuzzes the obscured areas, if you know how to find it (and if there isn’t already)?

The power of autism… and the danger of selecting against it

maths calculationsNew Scientist has a fascinating interview with record-breaking autist savant Daniel Tammet, where – among other stuff – he discusses the way in which he’s able to perform what seems to us like mathematical magic:

You wouldn’t use a word like “giraffe” without understanding what the words “neck” or “tall” or “animal” mean. Words only make sense when they are in this web of interconnected meaning and I have the same thing with numbers. Numbers belong to a web. When somebody gives me a number, I immediately visualise it and how it relates to other numbers. I also see the patterns those relationships produce and manipulate them in my head to arrive at a solution, if it’s a sum, or to identify if there is a prime.

Somehow I suspect that when Tammet talks of visualising numbers, he doesn’t see little piles and stacks of units like I do! Strange to think that what seems to us to be the only way to do something is not only one of many ways, but a horribly inefficient one as well. [image by Robert Scarth]

Meanwhile, a British autism expert warns that screening for autism in utero could deprive us of geniuses like physicist Paul Dirac:

… if this test led to some kind of prenatal treatment, such as the use of drugs to block the effect of testosterone which is already medically possible, would this be desirable? Caution is needed before scientists embrace prenatal testing so that we do not inadvertently repeat the history of eugenics or inadvertently ‘cure’ not just autism but the associated talents that are not in need of treatment.

Then again, maybe we’ll just be able to use drugs to induce autism as necessary in the near future, whether for personal gain or for society at large…

Has anyone here read David Zindell’s Requiem for Homo Sapiens series, by the way? It features a sort of art cult that voluntarily lives in a pseudo-autistic state, among many other weird ideas. Superb set of books, but a real head-f*ck.

Picowebzines as paying markets

We’ve already mentioned Thaumatrope here on Futurismic, but thanks to the ever-vigilant people at Tor.com we hear that Jetse de Vries – the man behind the forthcoming Shine anthology of optimist sf – is starting another Twitter-based webzine named Outshine, due to launch January 14th; check the Shine anthology blog for submission guidelines.

Two new venues for picofiction, both of them paying markets… is this a fad, or a sign of things to come? I don’t think anyone will deny that you can do amazing things with a short character limit, but hell knows it’ll be tricky to monetise a Twitter feed…

That said, at US$5 for up to 140 characters, Outshine is bloody close to paying SFWA professional rates per-word, and that’s not to be sniffed at!

Thermal memory data storage

lavaWe’ve had magnetic memory, semiconductor memory, and memristors: now we have thermal memory with the attendent field of study phononics:

In the current study, Wang and Li take the field of phononics one step further and show the feasibility of a thermal memory that can store data with heat. The scientists predict that such a heat memory could be experimentally realized in the foreseeable future with rapidly advancing nanotechnology. Their work is published in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters.

It seems that just about anything can be turned into a computer or computer component.
