Friday Free Fiction for 10th August

A slow week for free fiction, it appears … though I’m sure there was more that I didn’t hear about. Keep us posted, folks.

Strange Horizons has a new Tim Pratt story, “Artifice and Intelligence”.

Baen Books are making some of the stories from their delayed Libertarian anthology, Visions of Liberty, available for free; featured authors include the ubiquitous Robert Sawyer (“The Right’s Tough“), and Futurismic’s own Tobias Buckell in collaboration with Mike Resnick (“The Shackles of Freedom“).

Friday Free Fiction for 3rd August

Here’s your weekly serving of free genre fiction on the web:

Steve Libbey emailed to tell us about The Secret World Chronicle, a podcast novel series he’s been doing with Mercedes Lackey since last year; the whole of the first book is already available, plus some extras to tide us over until the next book starts being rolled out. Steve says, “the series is a sci-fi take on a world where heroic and villainous metahumans live alongside normal people. Needless to say, it is a blast to plot and write.” Sounds interesting. If you listen to it, why not email us a review here at Futurismic?

Nancy Jane Moore dropped us a line to let us know that she is among a batch of writers to have a story published in the latest issue of Farrago’s Wainscot, a free webzine featuring stories which are “quirky ones that might not quite fit other places,” in Nancy’s own words.

The first 63 pages of Joe Abercrombie’s novel The Blade Itself are available at Pyr’s website.

Project Gutenberg has added downloadable versions of an old Harl Vincent space opera, Creatures of Vibration, Project Mastodon by Clifford D Simak and Paul Ernst’s The Radiant Shell.

Via SF Signal: Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Colours Of Space is available as a free ebook or audiobook.

Darker Matter #5 is live – and it’s apparently the last ever issue, too. Which sucks (though we understand the cause).

Clarkesworld #11 is also out and about.

Stephen Baxter’s classic short story “Raft” has appeared at InfinityPlus, and bestSF.net are hosting the full text of Chris Roberson’s “Companion To Owls”.

Locus Online has excerpts from an interview with short story craftsman Paolo Bacigalupi.

Writing tips round-up

There seem to be a lot of posts containing advice for writers in my RSS reader at the moment, so I thought it would be nice to share them with everyone. Let’s see …

First up we have Jeff Vandermeer reposting the start of his “Evil Monkey Guide to Creative Writing” at his recently-relocated blog.

Futurismic blogger and rising science fiction novelist Tobias Buckell is too modest to plug things from his own blog when he writes here, but I have no such shame; he’s got links to some extensive notes on plotting that were taken at the Taos Toolbox writer’s workshop.

Finally, Jetse de Vries is e-submissions fiction editor for Interzone, but he’s a writer in his own right, too. He shares with us the lessons he’s learned from reading the slush pile, and discusses the value of “trunking” stories that you just can’t seem to sell.

Friday Free Fiction for July 27th

Rather than posting links to free fiction piecemeal as it turns up, we thought we’d aggregate the stuff we hear about over the course of the week, and serve it up every Friday for Futurismic folk. So here is the first installment of Friday Free Fiction:

The named-for-perfect-SEO Free Speculative Fiction Online site has posted a list of new arrivals, including a whole bunch of Lewis Shiner short stories.

Matthew Jarpe is sharing the first three chapters of his debut science fiction novel, Radio Freefall.

OK, not strictly fiction, but Subterranean Online has a column from Joe Lansdale and an interview with Patrick Rothfuss. And they are, er, free.

James Patrick Kelly has been gradually podcasting his 1989 novel Look Into The Sun, and is up to the twenty first installment. All the previous bits are still available, too.

And if you want to spend a few minutes having a chuckle at the efforts of a rank amateur, you can read my latest Friday Flash Fiction piece, “AWOL”.

Freshly arrived in the tubes of the intarwebs this week: Subterranean Online has just added a Mike Resnick story and a rare Charles Stross reprint to their latest edition (bringing the issue’s story count to eight), and Afterburn SF has seven new pieces of work online, including a story whose title alone is a work of genius:
