Israeli scientists have managed to simulate ‘ball lightning’ under laboratory conditions, which should hopefully provide some ideas as to how the stuff forms in nature.

Without degenerating into UFOs et.al. one wonders whether basic lab work of this nature would have any bearing on the elucidation of so-called Crop Circles?
As a disinterested observer of fundamental scientific research –vs. gadget-happy engineering applications– I have long had the disquieting sense that something very peculiar, a major natural phenomenon, has been occuring over centuries, worldwide, without ostensible scientific interest. Since the late 1980s, unquestionably genuine “circles” depicted on certain (shall we say) speculative web-sites have evolved “volitional” aspects which appear strange indeed. Idiotic frauds need not detain us… but something odd is going on, and I for one am extremely curious to discover –if possible– what it is.
