Too much happening for me to be able to do any sort of coherent commentary on it, really; I suspect we’ll still be picking apart the fag-end of 2010 a decade from now. So instead, a bunch of links:
- Targetting Wikileaks itself is to miss the point of Wikileaks; it’s a protocol that rides on the internet, and can be reproduced by pretty much anyone. The first high-profile alternative/equivalent to emerge is OpenLeaks, formed by the splinter group that hived off from Wikileaks in protest at Assange’s mercurial leadership tactics. [via TechDirt]. - EasyDNS, an ISP mistakenly blamed for taking down the Wikileaks domain (it woz EveryDNS wot dun it!) has decided to help Wikileaks out rather than hide from public opprobrium. “We’ve already done the time, we might as well do the crime,” says their CEO.
- Given that ICANN is planning to allow a proliferation of top-level domains (and is known for being very hands-off with respect to state-level censorship), what would happen is someone started a .leaks TLD? [also via TechDirt]
- And hey, why bother about having a central source site anyhow? As plenty of people have pointed out in response to tech-illiterate government figures and other blustering authoritarians, nuking Wikileaks would achieve nothing, because the leaks could just as easily have been dumped straight on BitTorrent. How timely, then, is the first BitTorrent client software which locates torrents directly from peer nodes rather than a central tracker?
- Shifting our attention momentarily to the maelstrom of pro-Wikileaks agitation, reports (or at least intimations) are coming in that, after yesterday’s decidedly hypocritical threats from (something or someone that may possibly have been a part of) Anonymous to DDoS the Electronic Frontier Foundation simply for not condoning their other DDoS attacks, the Legion is changing tack and changing tactics from window-smashing to agit-prop: Operation Leakspin begins. Or maybe it doesn’t… you never know what Anonymous is gonna do, really, even if you *are* Anonymous. All bets are off when it’s LULZ all the way down.
