Up To The Minute Cartography

Img 0013-1Maps have always been more like portraits than portrayals. They are historical, sketching a place at a point in time, always in the past. The MIT Senseable City Lab aims to bring maps into the present tense. Real Time Rome is a proof of concept, a series of cartographic representations of the city, updated with real-time data from public transportation systems, cellular tower usage patterns, and much more.

This is fascinating stuff, especially when you start thinking about the relationship maps have to the place they portray. The map is not the territory. A map is not a map without abstraction. But what you choose to abstract changes when your instruments allow you to portray the dynamism of real places. [oreilly radar]

Heinlein Centennial links-fest

Besides toasting the resurrection of Futurismic (ahem), there’s another cause for celebration for science fiction fans today; the 7th of July 2007 is the centennial anniversary of one of science fiction’s most celebrated writers, Robert Heinlein.

If you’re in the mood to immerse yourself in all things Heinleinian, or just fancy brushing up on your knowledge, SF Signal has just posted an immense collection of links about Robert Heinlein, the late Grand Master who changed the face of the genre forever. That should keep you busy until Monday!

Futurismic nearly fixed

Greetings, boys and girls; if you’re reading this in your RSS reader without having had to resubscribe to Futurismic, then the fiddle I shoved into the htaccess file has worked properly, and everything is just awesome.

Operational Beta version

The site theme needs some work to get it functioning exactly the way we want it to (which will be done incrementally, as time and our non-existent budget permits).

But we’ve actually got all our old posts and stories and essays from the previous installation in the archives … and we’re pretty much all set up to get back to business as usual, bringing you the fact and fiction of tomorrow with all the convenience of modern web2.0 gimcrackery.

Currently revamping

Hello Futurismic visitors. Sorry for the suddenness, but we are revamping Futurismic to a more stable backend and updating some items so that it’s easier for us to post. Please bear with us for the July 4th holiday, and make sure to check back by Monday!

Futurismic Downtime

We’re switching webhosts and blogging software, so expect to see some wonkiness when you visit Futurismic over the next few days. We’re hoping to be back online and publishing again by the end of the weekend, but it may take a little longer.
